My cousin in Milwaukee called my sourdough 'sad' and I finally get it

We were at his place for a family thing last month and I brought a loaf I was really proud of. He took one bite, looked at me, and said 'This is a sad loaf, dude. It's dense and tastes like flour water.' He then pulled out his starter from his fridge, fed it, and made a new dough in 10 minutes. Watching him, I realized I was overthinking the whole process and not letting it ferment long enough. Has anyone else had a blunt friend point out a basic cooking flaw you were totally blind to?

My uncle Frank once told me my scrambled eggs looked like wet packing peanuts, which honestly hurt more than the sourdough comment. He was right though, I was cooking them on way too high heat and stirring non-stop. Sometimes you need that brutally honest food critic in your life to break a bad habit. I still side-eye him at breakfast though.

Wait, wet packing peanuts? That's way too specific to not be accurate. I'm trying to figure out how egg white looks like foam.

Man, my dad said my first pancakes looked like sad coasters, so I feel that.
