A guy on my crew said my venting for a 200 lb aluminum pour was 'asking for a steam explosion' and now I'm second-guessing my whole setup.

He argued for bigger vents and a slower pour, but I've always trusted my method, so what's the real risk versus the extra time and metal loss?

Seriously, how big are your vents right now?

Man, that comment would make me stop and think too. Steam explosions are no joke, I saw one once from a damp mold and it sprayed metal everywhere. For a 200 lb pour, your vents need to be beefy, like at least an inch and a half diameter, maybe more depending on the shape. A slower pour helps the air get out ahead of the metal instead of trapping it. Yeah it costs a bit more time and metal, but way less than cleaning up a foundry bomb.
