Had a close call with a cracked crucible yesterday at the old Johnson Foundry
We were pouring a big batch of bronze, about 1500 degrees, and I saw a hairline crack I missed during the morning check. It started weeping metal onto the floor. I yelled for a full stop, and we had to move the whole pour to the backup unit. It took us an extra hour to clean up and reset. Has anyone else caught a crucible flaw that close to a pour?

Remember my buddy's crucible that split right down the seam?

Man that's scary. Read an article once about a foundry that had a full crucible failure. They said the sound of it cracking open was like a gunshot. Makes you triple check everything now. Glad you caught it in time.

Ever wonder if the crucible material itself has changed over the years? Some older guys at our shop swear the new ones don't last as long. Makes you question if cost cutting is playing a role in these failures.
