Saw a line of freelancers at the library in Austin all fighting for one outlet

I was at the central library downtown yesterday and there were at least eight people with laptops camped near the only working wall plug. The staff said it's like this every weekday afternoon since the nearby coffee shop closed. How do you handle power and workspace when your usual spot gets packed or shuts down?

Wait, is that the only outlet in the whole library? That seems wild for a central location. I feel like most libraries have more plugs than that, maybe they're just all in use or broken. My move is always to scout for less obvious spots, like near study carrels or in the stacks, because everyone flocks to the open tables first. I also keep a long extension cord in my bag, which feels a little extra but has saved me more than once. Honestly, the real fix is finding a second spot you can rotate to before the crowds show up.

Yeah, I'm the guy who brings the extension cord but then forgets the actual charger. @matthewkim has the right idea scouting those hidden spots early, because my backup plan is usually just staring at a dead laptop. Guess I need to get my act together before the next library trip.

The central library in my town has that same problem, but I found a spot in the periodicals section that has two outlets behind a giant shelf of newspapers. Nobody ever goes back there except old guys reading the paper. I bring a power strip with a short cord and just plug into whatever is available, then offer to share. A few weeks ago I got there at 8am and claimed a table near the back wall where I knew there was an outlet behind a plant. Worked fine until noon when the crowds showed up. My honest advice is to walk the whole building once and memorize every plug you find, because most libraries have way more than people realize.
