I swore by denatured alcohol for stripping until last month
Had a stubborn 1920s oak dresser from a Tacoma estate sale with what I thought was just old shellac. Did my usual wipe down with denatured alcohol and it barely touched it. Turns out someone had put a weird wax finish over the top decades ago, so I had to switch to a citrus based stripper and let it sit for a full hour. Anyone have a good trick for spotting a wax layer before you start?

Sounds like my usual weekend project luck.

Right? My last weekend project was supposed to be a simple shelf. Ended up needing three extra trips to the hardware store and it's still a little wobbly.

My neighbor's deck project last spring needed 42 concrete footings because the soil report was wrong. The rental auger alone cost more than the lumber.
