Saw a huge generational split at the county fair's pie contest

I was at the Clark County Fair last weekend and checked out the baking hall. The older folks had these perfect, classic lattice-top pies with handwritten recipe cards. The younger bakers had wild stuff like matcha custard in a cookie crust or bourbon peach with a crumble top. One lady in her 70s actually said to me, 'That's not a pie, that's a mess in a tin.' It made me wonder if sticking to tradition or trying new things is better. Has anyone else seen this kind of cooking culture clash up close?

My friend Nate entered a deconstructed apple pie with rosemary foam at our farmers market. The judge, an older baker, just stared at it for a full minute before moving on.

What even is rosemary foam, that sounds like something I'd spill on my good shirt. Poor @lisa749's friend Nate, I bet the judge was just trying to figure out where the actual pie went. I'm the worst baker, my last pie looked like a geology project. So I guess I'm team mess in a tin, because at least it's trying something. The old school bakers have skill I'll never have, but someone's gotta eat the weird matcha stuff.
