PSA: A hike past bioengineered rice paddies in Asia stuck with me

While trekking in rural Asia, I passed miles of rice fields using genetically modified strains for higher yield. This had me pondering if such fixes help local communities or just big companies in the long run. How do we ensure these farming changes don't harm traditional crop diversity?

Which Asian country showed you these modified rice fields?

Oh totally, it was the Philippines for me. I mean, the terraced rice fields up in the mountains around Banaue are just wild to see in person. They look like these huge, green steps cut right into the hills, all following the land's shape. It really stuck with me how they've been doing that for hundreds of years, changing the whole landscape to grow food. Felt way different than just seeing flat fields somewhere else, idk. Makes you realize how clever and hard working people had to be to make it work.

Wait, jamesh90 might be talking about the traditional terraces... those are stunning, but they're not really the bioengineered fields from the post. Those GM paddies are probably in flatter, big farm areas, not the ancient mountain steps. It's an easy mix-up... all that rice looks similar from a distance. But that's exactly why the original post is important. If the new stuff spreads, it could really change what's grown in those historic places.
