My cousin's vivid memory of a party that never happened has me questioning reality
So last week, my cousin Jake was over, and he started talking about this deep chat we had at my birthday party. Thing is, I never had a birthday party last year because of the pandemic. I told him that, and he looked at me like I was crazy. He described the cake, the guests, everything in detail. It felt so real to him, but I have no memory of it. This isn't the first time something like this has happened in my family. I'm starting to think our shared memories are glitching out, or maybe we're all from slightly different realities merging together.

Dude, that bit about the vivid memory of a party that never happened is wild. I've had something like that happen too. My buddy swore we went to a concert together last summer, but I was out of state for work. He described the band, the crowd, even what I was wearing. It was so detailed I almost believed him. Makes you wonder if memories are just messed up sometimes.

lee72, I get where you're coming from with the "memories are messed up" idea, but I see it differently. I don't think they're just broken. I believe we build them from pieces of stories and things we see. Your friend probably took details from other times and made a new story feel true. Our brains are always putting things together, not just getting things wrong. That's way more interesting to me.

Your brain's just good at convincing you.
