I was reading a report from a tech ethics group and found out a single AI training run can use more power than 100 US homes use in a year.

It was from the AI Now Institute's 2023 policy brief. I knew it was energy-intensive, but that specific number really put it into perspective for me. It makes the whole 'green AI' debate feel way more urgent. How do we balance the push for more powerful models with the environmental cost?

That 100 homes number is from the AI Now Institute, right?

Yeah I saw that report too. Their math on energy use feels off to me, like they're picking the worst case numbers. I've read other studies that show a much smaller footprint, especially as more data centers switch to clean power. It's a complex issue but just repeating that one scary stat doesn't help.

That "green AI" debate got me focusing on smaller, specialized models instead.
