I used to skip the opening songs on every anime, but a scene in 'Vinland Saga' made me stop

For years, I would just hit the skip button the second the opening credits started. I thought they were just filler, a waste of my viewing time. Then, about six months ago, I was watching the second season of 'Vinland Saga'. I was about to skip as usual, but my hand slipped and I let it play. The opening, 'River' by Anonymouz, started and the visuals showed Thorfinn working the fields. The lyrics and the quiet, tired feeling of the song hit me completely different after seeing the first few episodes. It wasn't just a cool song; it was a direct reflection of the main character's new, broken state of mind. I realized I had been missing a huge piece of the storytelling and mood-setting. Now I watch every opening at least once per series. Has a specific anime opening ever changed how you felt about a show?

Vinland Saga's second opening is a perfect example. It completely reframes the season once you understand Thorfinn's pain. I had the same thing happen with "Attack on Titan" years ago. The first opening's lyrics about being cattle in a cage took on a horrible new meaning later on. Skipping them really is cutting out part of the art.

I watched the first season of Mob Psycho 100 and thought the opening was just a cool song. Then I got to the second season and realized all the lyrics were about Mob's growth and his feelings. It hit so much harder on a rewatch. Honestly it made me go back and check other shows I had skipped openings on. You really do miss those layers if you just skip ahead.

Totally get that! @ben447 is right, some openings are just key to the whole vibe.
