Rode with a crane operator last month on a big oak takedown in Portland. He said 'you climb like you're 25 but you plan like you're 50' and it stuck with me. Ive always been a 'get up and see' guy, but hes got spreadsheets of weight estimates and hinge angles for every job. We saved 2 hours on that job just because he walked the drop zone before I even tied in. Anyone else changed their prep routine after working with a good crane crew?
Having a crane op who actually walks the zone with you is such a game changer, most guys just want to set up and go. Ever since I started doing a quick weight and swing check before tying in, my days go way smoother. Takes 10 mins up front but saves you hours of guessing.
