Took my date to a drive-in movie theater last summer and forgot how awkward the pause between movies is

Back in the 90s, my high school girlfriend and I went to the local drive-in near Columbus, Ohio, and we had 15 minutes of dead silence between flicks because I panicked and couldn't think of anything to say. I tried making a joke about the bugs on the windshield and she just stared at me. Anyone else have that weird gap where you realize you have zero chemistry?

You mentioned "zero chemistry" and that bugs on the windshield joke - that reminds me of when my wife and I went to a drive-in near Tulsa back in 2008. The first movie was a cheesy horror flick, and during the intermission I tried to impress her by explaining how the projector worked. She just stared at me like I had three heads. We ended up talking about the smell of popcorn and old tires for twenty minutes. It was awkward but somehow we laugh about it now.

Have you ever read that thing about how couples who can laugh at their awkward first dates end up lasting longer? Idk if it's true, but it definitely sounds like what @richard_dixon described turned into one of those stories.

Wait, isn't the awkward silence the whole point of going to a drive-in movie with someone?
