Had to choose between watching the original RoboCop or the 2014 remake with my nephew last weekend

He's 14 and never seen either one. I sat him down and said we can watch the 80s classic or that shiny new one with Joel Kinnaman. Picked the original obviously. He spent the first 15 minutes laughing at the stop-motion ED-209 but by the end he was all in on how dark and funny it was. Has anyone else tried showing the original to a kid who only knows modern action movies? How did it go?

The ED-209 was definitely practical effects not stop motion.

Wait, the ED-209 was practical? I just assumed it was stop-motion this whole time, never really thought about it. @the_rose you just blew my mind a little bit with that one. My nephew would probably appreciate it even more knowing it was a physical model getting all jerky and violent.

Yeah my buddy Mike saw a making-of doc about RoboCop and he told me he couldn't believe how big the ED-209 puppet actually was. Like six feet tall and all those little jerky limb movements were just the motors and hydraulics inside the suit struggling to keep up. @sarah531 your nephew would probably lose it seeing the behind the scenes stuff, there's a clip where they had to cover the floor with padding because the thing kept crashing over on its own weight.
