Rant: My friend called the new 'Point Break' a pointless cash grab and I think he's wrong

Honestly, I was at a bar in Tacoma last week and my buddy went on a ten minute rant about the 2015 remake. He said it was a total flop and asked why it even existed. Tbh, I watched it on a plane last year and it's not that bad. The extreme sports stuff is pretty cool, even if the story is different. Has anyone else seen it and thought it was okay, or is it just me?

Wait, you actually watched a whole movie on a plane? I can never focus with all that noise. Anyway, your friend is being too harsh. That remake is a dumb fun time if you turn your brain off. The skydiving and surfing scenes are worth it alone.

What if the whole point of a remake is just to get a new generation to check out the original? I saw the new one first and then went back to watch the 1991 movie because I was curious. It got me into a classic I would have skipped otherwise. Maybe its real job was to be a big, loud commercial for the better film. Kind of makes the cash grab talk seem a little short-sighted, doesn't it?
