My game group in Portland fell apart after a 6-hour argument over a house rule

It started with a debate on resource conversion in Terraforming Mars and ended with someone leaving their player board behind. Has a small rules dispute ever completely derailed your group?

Damn, what was the house rule that caused the meltdown? I've seen groups get heated over tiny things, but a six-hour fight sounds like there were bigger issues already there.

Best advice is to pause and reset before anyone starts packing.

Has your group tried a hard reset where everyone takes a 15 minute break to cool off before trying to resolve things? @claire_walker is right, six hours of arguing over resource conversion means there were probably already some bad feelings bubbling under the surface. Best advice I've got is to write any disputed house rule on a scrap of paper, set a timer for 10 minutes to hash it out, and if you can't agree, just table it for another session. Leaving your player board behind is the real sign that the game is done for the night, just like mark361 said you gotta pause before anyone starts packing up.

Leaving the player board behind is the real crime here.
