Old timer at the hardware store said something that stuck with me
I was picking up some paint at Ace Hardware on 3rd Street last Saturday when this guy who looked like he'd been doing renovations since the 70s said loyalty to a brand is mostly about being let down less than other brands. He pointed at the rack of paint rollers and said he's been using Purdy for 25 years because they only failed him twice, while every other brand he tried let him down at least five times. Made me think about why I still buy Stanley tools even though they're not always the best. What brand has screwed you over the least over the long haul?

Man I had a similar moment with a guy at our local True Value about a decade ago. He told me the same thing about DeWalt drills and it hit me hard because I was still using my old one from 2008 even though it was beat to hell. That thing finally died last year and I replaced it with a Milwaukee, but I still grab the old DeWalt for light jobs because it never let me down when it mattered. The truth is most brands have a sweet spot in their lineup where they just work and you learn to stick to those specific models. For me that's been the Stanley FatMax tape measures, they are the only ones that don't break after the second drop off a ladder. I think a lot of it comes down to finding that one tool or brand that matches your "I don't want to think about this going wrong" needs and just accepting its quirks.

Oh man @garcia.laura that's spot on, I heard a contractor say the same thing about DeWalt's old XRP line being way better than the new stuff!
