Pulled up a little tuft of carpet from a 1972 install yesterday and the backing was still solid as a rock
I started pulling it just to check the pad condition and the jute backing didn't even crumble, those old glue-down methods had some serious staying power. Has anyone else run into ancient carpet that was way tougher to tear out than you expected?

Oh man, that brings back a memory. I once tried to pull up some old shag carpet from a rental house and ended up having to cut it into strips with a box cutter because the backing was basically fused to the subfloor. Thought I could just yank it up in one piece. Nope. Spent the whole afternoon fighting with it.

Wait, you were in a rental and still had to tear up the carpet yourself?!

Ugh, I feel this so hard. Did the same thing with some ancient shag in my first apartment. Ended up sweating on the floor for hours with a utility knife and a crowbar, feeling like I was in some kind of weird punishment. The adhesive they used back then was basically industrial grade, I swear. Hope your back wasn't as wrecked as mine was afterward.
