Picked backyard composting over a curbside service, saving $15 a month
Last month I had to decide between signing up for a curbside compost pickup for $20 a month or building my own bin in the backyard. I went with the DIY route using an old trash can I drilled holes in. After 4 weeks I've got about 2 gallons of wormy soil that doesn't smell bad at all. Has anyone else tried making their own compost bin for cheap?

You got the same idea as me? I just made one out of a plastic storage tote with holes poked in the lid and it's working way better than I thought it would.

I was never a big believer in those DIY compost bins. Figured it was one of those things people tried once and then gave up on. But your post got me thinking, and I gave it a shot with a similar setup. A couple weeks in and the soil from that bin is already looking better than the stuff I've been buying from the store. I'm pretty surprised how simple it actually is.

It's wild how fast homemade stuff outpaces the store bought...
