Stack Overflow scared me for years but now I use it daily

Started learning Python 6 months ago. Everyone said use Stack Overflow but the comments looked mean. First time I asked a question I got downvoted. Felt terrible. Then I searched first and found my exact problem answered. Now I visit it 3 times a day. Anyone else avoid it at first?

Oh man, @troyreed you hit the nail on the head with that gatekeeping comment. I totally get the fear - my first Python question got downvoted too because I didn't realize someone had already asked basically the same thing but with different wording. It took me a while to figure out how to search properly, like filtering by votes or looking at the "accepted answer" badge. Once I got the hang of it though, it became my go-to for everything from debugging a simple loop to figuring out pandas merge issues. The key is just lurking for a bit before posting anything, you know?

My friend Sarah spent 3 days stuck on a JavaScript bug, too scared to post on Stack Overflow, until @the_rose told her to just search the error code instead. She found the fix in 5 minutes and now calls the site her coding Bible.

Yeah, isn't that gatekeeping stuff just the worst?
