Bought a $20 french press from the thrift store vs my fancy $150 espresso machine, and honestly the press wins every morning for the pure taste.
The espresso machine gives me 30 seconds of loud noise and a bitter shot, but that french press just sits there quietly for 4 minutes and makes a cup that actually tastes like the beans I paid for, has anyone else ditched their machine for something simpler?

That French press thing is wild because I actually read a coffee study that said paper filters strip out some of the natural oils and flavors from the beans. The french press lets all that stuff stay in your cup, which is probably why it tastes so much better than the espresso machine. Makes sense that a metal mesh filter would keep more of the good stuff compared to a paper filter or a high pressure machine that burns the coffee. I have a friend who went back to a simple pour over after spending $400 on a machine, and he says the same thing about taste. Do you think the type of beans you use matters more for the press compared to a machine?

Oh wow, I always thought the espresso machine was the gold standard but you make a really good point. I used to swear by my machine but now I'm wondering if I've been missing out this whole time.

Well I have to respectfully disagree a bit here. I've used both methods quite a bit and honestly a good espresso machine can produce a much more concentrated flavor that you just can't get from a French press. The key is getting the grind right and not letting the water get too hot, not that the machine itself ruins the coffee.
