Took 6 weekends to fix a simple uneven bathroom subfloor

Started leveling the bathroom floor before tile and thought it'd be a 2 day job. Ended up pulling up half the plywood because the joists were warped and it took me from September right into October. Has anyone else found hidden surprises that blew up their timeline?

Man, that's brutal. I had a similar thing happen when I was trying to just patch some drywall, but it turned out the whole wall had old water damage behind it. I ended up tearing it all down to the studs and it took an extra month. The joist issue is the worst kind of hidden surprise though, because it's not something you can just slap some compound over and call it a day. Did you end up sistering the joists or using shims to get it flat?

Sistering the joists was the only move here, shims would've just been a bandaid on a problem that'll come back. Warped joists don't magically straighten out over time, they always get worse. That's the real kicker with old houses, you think you're just fixing one small thing and end up rebuilding the whole floor system. It's frustrating but at least now you know it's solid forever. Drywall surprises are annoying but joist issues are on a whole other level of "why did I start this project.

Man, that's the worst kind of can of worms to open.
