Serious question, did anyone else think flower foam was just a waste of money?

I ran a small shop in Tacoma for two years and refused to buy it, thinking it was a gimmick. Then I got a huge wedding order for 30 centerpieces that needed to hold shape for 8 hours in a hot tent. My assistant brought some Oasis foam as a backup. We did a test piece, and the difference in how the stems stayed put and drank water was night and day. I had to admit I was wrong. What other basic supplies did you guys resist using at first?

Same with good potting soil. Used the cheap stuff for years until my plants just gave up.

Totally get that, reminds me of what @margaret_taylor42 said about soil. I used to skip buying proper floral tape for the same reason, thought it was pointless until my hand-tied bouquets kept falling apart.
