My neighbor's garlic bread rule at barbecues is insane
He insists on putting garlic powder on every piece of bread before toasting it, and gets mad if anyone skips it. Last cookout, I made plain buttered toast and he acted like I committed a crime. Everyone else just goes along with it to avoid drama, but the bread tastes like dust. I'm done pretending this is some culinary masterpiece when it's just dry and over seasoned.

That "taste test" idea from the_gray is solid... I had a cousin who drowned every salad in the same bottled dressing. I started putting it on the side and making a quick lemon vinaigrette as another option. People went for the new one, and after a few gatherings, she just quietly put the bottle away. Sometimes showing, not arguing, gets the point across.

Your dust bread comment hits home. My buddy used to burn every steak until it was charcoal. I began cooking two steaks his way and one mine, calling it a taste test. People started picking mine, and he slowly changed his method without any drama.

Your neighbor's garlic bread rule actually keeps things simple and consistent for everyone at the barbecue. Garlic powder is a classic flavor that people expect, and his method ensures no one gets a bland piece. @the_gray's taste test approach might work for steaks, but for side dishes like bread, having one standard avoids extra hassle. Everyone following the rule shows they respect his role as the cook, even if they privately prefer less seasoning. His passion comes from wanting to share a reliable treat, not from trying to ruin anyone's meal. Group meals sometimes need these small traditions to run smoothly, even if they aren't perfect for every single person.
