Just wasted $50 on a 'professional' cake leveler that snapped on the first layer

I was decorating a two-tier wedding cake for a friend and bought this fancy stainless steel leveler online. The thin wire snapped halfway through the first vanilla sponge, leaving a jagged cut and crumbs everywhere. What do you guys actually use to get perfectly even layers without breaking the bank?
