Trying to figure out the watch order for the Fate series was a two day rabbit hole

I wanted to start Fate/Stay Night but got confused by all the different routes and adaptations. I spent about 16 hours total reading old forum threads and watching YouTube explainers just to make a plan. Has anyone else found a simpler guide that actually works?

I think the_ray's suggestion to "just pick one and start" is well-meaning, but it leaves out a key problem. The Fate series is built around three different routes in the visual novel, and each one assumes you've seen the one before it. If you just randomly pick an adaptation like the old Deen studio show from 2006, you'll get a mix of all three routes and spoil major twists from Unlimited Blade Works and Heaven's Feel. That's actually the worst way to start because it ruins the experience. A simpler guide that works is to watch Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works (the 2014 series by Ufotable) first, then Fate/Zero as a prequel, then the Heaven's Feel movies last. It skips the original Saber-focused route, but it's the cleanest path that avoids confusion.
