Pothos vs. philodendron comparison after 3 months at my desk
I always thought pothos and philodendron were basically the same plant, but after keeping both on my cubicle shelf for 3 months the difference is wild. The philodendron grew these big split leaves while the pothos just stayed leggy and plain. I'm near a north facing window in downtown Dallas and the philodendron just soaked up the low light way better. Has anyone else found one easier to keep alive than the other?

omg right?! I had the exact same thing happen with mine lol. I thought I was doing something wrong when the pothos just stayed all stringy and boring but the philodendron took off like crazy. I'm in Chicago with a similar north window and the philodendron leaves got huge within like two months, it's insane. Pothos just sits there like it's mad at me or something lmao. Team philodendron all the way honestly.

i read something online from a plant scientist that said pothos actually store energy in their roots first before putting out big leaves, so if the pot is too big they just focus on filling it up underground instead of growing up top. that might be what's happening lol. philodendron just grows wherever it wants without caring about the pot size though, i think they're just built different. my philodendron brasil in a north window has vines like 4 feet long now and i barely do anything to it. pothos is still sitting there looking grumpy in the same spot no matter what i try.

Man that totally tracks with how everything in life seems to work right? You put all this energy into one thing and it just sits there while something else you barely touch thrives. Its like how my tomato plants in the backyard go crazy when I ignore them but the basil I water every day just gets sad and droopy. Maybe there's a lesson in there somewhere about not trying too hard or giving things too much space to settle before they grow. You ever notice that with other plants or hobbies?
