That time I killed my venus flytrap by giving it tap water

I was watering my plants in my apartment in Portland and used straight tap water on my venus flytrap like I do with everything else. After about two weeks all the traps turned black and the whole thing just gave up. Has anyone else accidentally killed a sensitive plant by not checking the water type first?

Yeah it's funny how we just assume water is water right? I did the same thing with my first money tree... gave it filtered water from the fridge but it still got all brown and sad. Turns out even the "good" tap water has stuff in it that builds up over time. It's kind of like how people will use the same dish soap for everything and wonder why their cast iron skillet starts looking weird. Different things need different care but we get lazy and think one size fits all...

Yeah I totally used to think any water works for any plant. This changed my mind hard.

My neighbor actually learned this the hard way with her lavender plants. She was using tap water straight from the kitchen sink and couldn't figure out why they kept getting sad and droopy. Someone at the garden center finally told her it was the minerals in the water, and @ben_nguyen is right about that buildup thing. She switched to distilled water and now her lavender looks better than mine, which still gets tap water sometimes on lazy days. It's a small change but it makes a real difference.
