I finally tested the 'five second rule' with my own kitchen floor
My roommate swore food was fine if you picked it up fast, so I dropped a piece of buttered toast on our tile. I let it sit for exactly four seconds, then sent a sample to a lab through a mail-in kit I found online. The results came back with a high bacteria count, basically the same as leaving it for a minute. Has anyone else done a real test on different surfaces like carpet or wood?

That mail in lab kit is a cool way to actually check. Makes me wonder if the type of food matters more than the surface, like wet stuff vs dry crackers. Your butter probably made it a bacteria magnet instantly. I should try that with a dry chip on my gross dorm carpet.

Yeah, your dorm carpet is probably its own ecosystem by now. Good luck with that science project.

Did the lab results break down what kinds of bacteria were on the toast? I'm curious if it was mostly harmless stuff from the air or something actually nasty from the floor.
