My sister said to just ignore the online pile-on against that comedian, and I should have listened.
About a year ago, this comedian I liked got called out for some old, bad jokes. My sister, who works in PR, told me straight up, 'Don't add your voice to the noise. It never helps and just feeds the machine.' I didn't listen. I jumped into the comments on Twitter to defend him, saying people were taking things out of context. All that happened was I got a hundred angry replies calling me names, and the whole thing just got more attention. I spent a whole weekend stressed, checking my phone. The comedian ended up apologizing anyway, and my posts did nothing. My sister was right. The online call-out cycle just needs fuel to keep going, and I gave it some. Has anyone else jumped into a debate like that and just made it worse?
