Saw something wild at the bike park in Boulder last weekend

Everyone swears by using a torque wrench for everything, but I watched a guy there tune a full suspension with just a basic multi tool and it rode perfect. He said he's been doing it that way for 12 years and has never had a bolt strip. I get the safety thing, but maybe we overthink some of this stuff. Has anyone else seen a pro mechanic work without a full torque spec sheet?

I used to just point my camera at the sky and hope for the best

Now I use a free app called Stellarium to plan my shots for the exact time and location, which showed me when the Milky Way would be perfectly positioned over Mount Rainier. Anyone have other free planning tools they like?

Just realized my old boot brand was letting me down the whole time

I wore the same brand of work boots for 8 years, swearing they were the best. Last Tuesday, I was on a job in a wet crawlspace and my feet were soaked and freezing after just 2 hours. My new guy had on a different pair and his were bone dry. He said, 'Man, I got these three seasons ago and they've never leaked.' I bought a pair of his brand that afternoon. My feet have been warm and dry all week. Has anyone else had a brand they were loyal to just fail when it really mattered?

Appreciation post: the old wire brush and vacuum trick for a tight flue

Back in the 90s, I had a job on a 1920s house with a flue so narrow my standard rods wouldn't fit. The owner didn't want the brickwork touched. After a day of frustration, an old timer I worked with told me to try something. He said to tape a small wire brush to a section of flexible dryer vent hose and hook that to my shop vac hose. We ran it up from the bottom, and the vacuum pulled the brush up, scrubbing as it went. It cleared a solid inch of glazed creosote in one pass. I still use a version of that setup for tricky old liners. Anyone else have a weird old method that still works?

My kid asked why we don't have a toaster anymore and it made me think about kitchen gadgets

Honestly, we got rid of ours a year ago and just use the oven broiler. My wife said 'it's one less thing to clean and it tastes better' and I realized she's right, the broiler gives way better color on the bread. Are we weird for ditching a basic appliance, or is the toaster overrated?

I wrote all my secrets in a notebook my sister never found. Today, I pick which apps can see where my kid is. Finding the right mix of safety and respect is tough.

Salvaged maple made my kitchen install a breeze

Lately, I notice folks wanting wood with a history. I used some salvaged maple from a school gym floor. It was clean and stable, so fitting went smooth. The homeowner said it reminded them of their childhood. Felt good to give old wood a new life.

Grandma's cooking made a dollar stretch further than any app can today

Remember when a big pot of beans and a sack of potatoes were the base of everything. Now everyone acts like you need a dozen fancy ingredients from some special store just to make soup. Her food was simple, cheap, and it fed a crowd without a second thought. I feel like we overcomplicate saving money now.

Just realized that skipping all tourist spots might be a mistake

I used to think popular attractions were just cash grabs with nothing real to offer. Then I visited one and found it pretty fun and full of energy. Is the idea that all tourist places are bad just a snobby myth?
